Radio Newark is an IRS-recognized educational broadcast service. Day-to-day operations are supported by a small group of volunteers -- Ken Chisholm, David Lascko, Dave Debski, Ken Grant, Will Webber and Stephen Worden. A larger group (including you?🙂) encourage our activities and support us financially.
The transmitter for WIZU 99.9 FM is located on the STAR Campus of the University of Delaware. We also operate a streaming server for our many online listeners. We began formal operations online on April 1, 2010 and commenced FM broadcast operations on February 7, 2017.
A great group of volunteers help operate the station. Dave Lascko is the professional voice you hear doing our announcements. Ken Chisholm, Ken Grant, Dave Debski and Will Webber solve problems, help with fundraising, attend meetings and serve in community outreach. Stephen Worden operates the backend hardware, servers, software, and RF gear with assistance from the others as needed. A weekly 'staff meeting' is held every Monday morning at 7am.
These same volunteers were responsible for our successful contact with the International Space Station. Radio Newark staffmembers wrote a proposal to NASA, which was accepted in 2018. We also organized and hosted the event, held at Delcastle Technical High School. We built a UHF ground station and satellite tracking system to communicate with the ISS. Students from Delcastle spoke with astronaut Dr Serena Auñón-Chancellor *LIVE* as she flew through space at 17,000 MPH directly overhead. Governor John Carney, Representative Paul Baumbach, Lt Governor Bethany Hall-Long and other dignitaries came to acknowledge the importance of science education. What a fun day!
Science! Space news. Undersea exploration. Nanoengineering. Archaeology. Microelectronics. Astrobiology. Do you find these interesting?
We do too. So we built a radio station that focuses on STUFF THAT MATTERS.
And you started listening. Others offered excellent suggestions for content. SUpporters and donors came alongside and we became a non-profit, non-commercial educational broadcast service. Woohoo!
Because things like the Mars Science Laboratory are MORE IMPORTANT than Game of Thrones.
Radio Newark is operated by Newark Community Radio, Inc., a non-profit corporation chartered to provide non-commercial, educational broadcast services. Newark Community Radio is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.
